The “Thrive in the 05” Initiative

Our city of Tucson is known has embarked on an ambitious journey to revitalize one of its communities. This effort, known as the “Thrive in the 05” initiative, concentrates on an area surrounding North Stone Avenue and West Prince Road, colloquially referred to as the “05” zip code area.

The project’s began with an application by the city of Tucson for a $1.3 million Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The initial grant provided the seed investment necessary to kick-start this ambitious project. But the momentum didn’t stop there. A recent development saw Tucson being awarded an additional $50 million Choice Neighborhood Implementation Grant, significantly amplifying the potential impact of “Thrive in the 05”.

A Holistic Approach to Community Revitalization

The “Thrive in the 05” initiative harnesses a dynamic and comprehensive strategy to power Tucson’s historic northern gateway into an era of transformation. It revolves around three components: housing, people, and neighborhoods. Armed with a substantial grant from HUD, this initiative is ready to tackle key challenges, including crime prevention, public health, economic development, and education.

Thrive in the 05 celebrates our unique history and cultural identity, fueling a community where everyone has the opportunity to flourish. With our strategic location, diverse resources, and growing population, we’re turning potential into progress.

This initiative is not merely about physical improvements to infrastructure and buildings. Enhancing the quality of life in the 05 neighborhood is the ultimate vision.

What distinguishes this initiative is the dedication to resident-led decision-making. The people who know the neighborhood best are placed at the forefront of planning and implementing change. A community that listens and responds to its people - that’s the “Thrive in the 05” commitment.

Residents, businesses, non-profit organizations, and other community stakeholders are actively encouraged to participate in community meetings and contribute their thoughts on proposed changes.

Addressing Housing and Education

Housing plays a critical role in community development and safety. Recognizing this, “Thrive in 05” has made affordable housing one of its central concerns. The grant will fund over 550 new or rehabilitated housing units, create extensive support for residents in Tucson House (the city's largest public housing facility), and invest mixed-income housing in the Oracle Road and Miracle Mile area.

Along with the main objectives, the grant will homeownership preservation, beautification, and development of community kitchen spaces to provide training and increase food access.

Education

The initiative aims to improve educational outcomes by forming partnerships with local schools and educational institutions. By offering academic support and enrichment programs, it seeks to break the cycle of poverty and open doors for future opportunities.

Stimulating Economic Growth

Economic revitalization is fundamental to community resilience. Recognizing this, “Thrive in the 05” has put forth efforts to stimulate local businesses’ growth and foster entrepreneurship within the community. It also aims to improve access to essential services like healthcare and transportation.

A Beacon of Hope

The “Thrive in the 05” initiative represents a beacon of hope for many Tucson residents who have long awaited these changes. With significant financial backing from HUD and a clear plan for comprehensive community development, Tucson is on track to transform this historically underserved neighborhood into a model of resilience and vibrancy.
